In an interview on the SmartLess podcast, Julia Garner revealed that she had to convince Madonna that she could dance in order to land the role in the biopic of the “Like a Virgin” singer.

Julia Garner was asked by hosts Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman about the audition process. The actress admitted that it was an intimidating experience.

“It happened naturally. I knew they were developing a project, making a film about her, so I went to audition,” recalled the star of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.”

“I kind of wanted to see if I could do it because I wasn’t a trained dancer, and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically. And sing. Sing with her!” she said.

The actress also mentioned that she thought about what Madonna would do to deal with the nerves. “It was kind of like: ‘You can accept it or not. But if you don’t accept it, if I leave this room, the mistake is yours,'” Julia Garner commented.

According to Garner, the film is still in development. Entertainment Weekly reported that the project was delayed in early 2023 so that Madonna could focus on her Celebration Tour.

The singer was said to have resumed work on the film in 2024, and Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Julia Garner was still cast in the role.

In July 2024, Madonna shared a photo on Instagram of herself reviewing the film’s script while typing on a typewriter.
